What Does a Long-Term Tarot Practice Truly Teach Us About Life and Truth?
A devoted Tarot journey cultivates deep self-awareness, ethical responsibility, and emotional honesty, guiding both reader and client toward acceptance, transformation, and authentic personal power.
January Psychic E-zine
I’ve been reading Tarot cards for people I’ve never met before, since 1975. It’s exhilarating, wondrous and honestly the elite way to develop a serious relationship with this archetypal, depicted prescription to enlightenment. I know that reads rather immodestly lofty. But all true when you speak with long-in-the-tooth Tarot adherents, like myself. The dynamic unfolds in a quantum sea of perceptions, impressions, and expressions.

The Deeper Truths Learned From a Lifetime of Tarot
Few professions would have afforded me this deeply intimate and immediate soul-link to another human being. It’s more than psychology, spirit, soul and creativity. It’s a peek into someone’s life path. A poem, a ballad, a chant might suffice here but sadly I’m not gifted in any of these! I can do prose well enough but never does it reach the deliciousness of my innermost thoughts and feelings.
I think the life of an artist is a tortured one. I’ve had the privilege to read for several in my career – painters, writers, actors, singers – all artistry and artists should be celebrated with every fiber of our being. I cannot imagine what an unbelievably bereft world it would be without them.
Heartfully, I’m honoured at clients’ receptiveness to sharing all who they are with me. Thanks to all of you for enriching my life in ways you might not know yet.
Teaching Others to be Advisors
I halted my classroom Tarot courses several years ago. I work one-on-one with readers who are struggling with a particular aspect of reading. It might be a client whom they are struggling to understand, or a disruption in their own personal lives that they worry is throwing their tarot practice into disarray.
Teaching advanced initiates how to perform a service which is intuitive and individualistic serves to keep my own work fresh and innovative. As an initiate and mentor, we share a multi-layered commitment to this mind-altering and complex deck of cards. Tarot initiates are creative, psychic folk who listen and adhere to an inner voice with unwavering conviction. I haven’t met a compliant, or particularly conformist Tarotist yet. An oxymoron indeed! The Conformist Tarot Reader.
It’s the brave individual who is willing to plunge into this process despite the quaking knees, quivery voice boxes, knocking knees, sweaty hands sticking to the cards… Dedication and persistence of the highest degree is necessary to master the Tarot accurately and authentically. To meet our own expectations and demands is the biggest obstacle of all.
Initiates of the Tarot grow psychologically in ways that are random and maybe catastrophic. Their ability to empathize, be non-judgmental, and compassionate builds a more solid foundation in their personality structures; comfortably supporting deeper intimacy with a multitude of people simultaneously.
Furthermore, and much to an initiate’s surprise, their inner transformation alters their relationships with close friends and family. Liking some people less and others more; becoming less tolerant of some behaviours, while being more tolerant of others. All these changes are felt and either supported or rejected by significant others in their lives, creating a feedback loop that further escalates this transformative process.

Some students have reported their lives spinning into such a whirlwind of change, they have needed to seek spiritual and counseling guidance. Some have spent years rediscovering their new place in the world as a consequence of this intense study.
If you’ve ever been dedicated to a spiritual path, you can imagine that it’s the spiritual work that is the toughest segment in this Tarot rite of passage. Adhering to know and be true to thyself; pushing against the boundaries of your own limitations will become your most daunting (mammoth), thrilling (terrifying), fulfilling (robust change) task.
Altering Another’s Destiny
The potential to altering another’s destiny with awareness, puts burdens on our soul. Each reader must navigate this challenge with a fearlessness of purpose that sends most folks running for cover. There is a natural and real fear of saying something that will alter another’s destiny. It’s a good fear. An honest fear. I encourage it wholeheartedly. It’s one of the costs of doing the profession. The best readers know this well and use this awareness to be one of their guiding lights along the path.
The Reader who has taken the Tarot Journey to Enlightenment themselves, will have earned a clearer, purer, inner conviction that they will provide a service that is un-self-conscious, honourable, and healing. It takes time and practice. You must take the Fool’s leap, however, which is the first dozen or so readings for those you have never met before. This will build an unshakable confidence that will sustain you through the remainder of your journey to Tarot Master.
Truly inspired readers, (that I have had the honour of meeting many in my students over the years), don’t resort or collapse into easy. They are real people who have worked many long, intense hours to learn this “archetypal tinker toy” and how best to use it to serve others. You’ll know them when you meet them. They treat you with respect, tell you what they can and cannot do honestly and carry a brand of wisdom that’s just so nourishing to be around.

The Honest Psychic
Clients have often been caught off-guard with my honest delivery, especially when it hasn’t been in alignment with what, “others they have consulted have said”.
“Who do I believe?”, they ask.
Rightly so. But outcomes can shift. Are you living your destiny? That would be amazing if you are. There are so many obstacles that block true destiny unfoldment (access to resources, opportunity, self-confidence, commitment, etc.), and likely the client who is trying out every reader s/he can, is seeking only to hear one outcome. You might be reading this and thinking this is the silliest thing you’ve ever read but trust me, this is more common than you would imagine.
Many psychic readers opt to provide a feel good, be happy reading. Variations like,
“Everything is beautiful in its own way”, “there is a reason for everything”, “everything is going to work out just fine.” The beauty of this approach, is that as a reader you will effectively avoid unpleasant disagreements, tears and cursing that might be levied at you for having been the messenger of bad news.
Until all your honey-tonqued predictions fail to unfold. Then the screaming and recriminating – all the anger over not getting what they wanted when you PROMISED – starts. The road of least resistance always turns out to be the road of most resistance. That I learned from my dear, wise aunt Helen.
I’ve had years and places of training as a therapist along with extensive personal work spanning decades to be bothered by such nonsense. I’ve also cut my teeth on more than 20 formal courses (M.A. level in cultural, religious, artistic and counselling). I’ve been kicking around studying and practicing helping people live their best lives for literally decades in some form or another. It’s not always joyful. I could write a …well no I don’t think I will.
Emotional outbursts are an inevitable tone during any intimate interaction. I teach my students that they will sacrifice their intuitive gifts by failing to say what they see and feel regarding the client, even if it’s the horrifying opposite of what the client wants to hear.
As a reader of the soul, you will be sacrificing your gift of awareness which is far more dire than you might imagine. Your readings will become rote, irrelevant, so sickeningly sweet, they have become at best, a repetitive bore. This type of approach is not helping anybody except perhaps the reader’s pocket book. Here my Scorpio Sun (and seven planets in Scorpio just for good measure) is coming through. She shows up in teaching.

Acceptance Leads to a New Beginning
It’s only when we accept the reality of our situation, can we move on to find true fulfillment. Nothing is worse than waiting for an outcome that will never happen. You aren’t going to win a lottery that will lift you out of debt; no, that lover won’t be returning on their knees begging forgiveness; yes, your mother is jealous of you (and or your lover) and won’t ever boost or give you a leg-up.
Truths that are agonizing to hear! Once we have fully taken on board this possible reality however, we can move on to get out of debt, meet someone new who is more worthy of our love. We can finally take a pass on that nasty, narcissistic or borderline mother who never gave a damn about us. We can be free to find a new adopted mother who can help us heal our mother-wound through unconditional positive regard.
The students who study with me and succeed to professional readership are special individuals. The numbers who went on to open a professional Tarot practice are few, maybe 1% – and they continue to explore, study and challenge themselves to be more authentic to their true selves and path every day. I know who you are and I follow your work with excitement through social media.

I have my full tarot classes available online on my web site and there are many free courses besides online. Take them all! Partner with another or a group to study. If you’re moving into professional readership or you’ve been doing it for a while and want some professional guidance and feedback, call me.
We’re heading into the heart of winter, the heart of darkness (Negredo) so be kind to yourselves! It’s challenging to stay positive when the darkness rules. But it has its beauty in the rest, the quiet and introspective support.
Review
The lessons I learned from you over those early years serve me every day. The most important one for me, too, was to stop waiting… and to grab my own brass ring. Once I did that, I never had to wait for anyone ever again. Thank you for teaching me how to come into my own power – without that, I feel I would have stayed lost and alone for a very long time!
So much love and gratitude to you,
Charles

What a Lifetime with Tarot Ultimately Reveals
A long-term Tarot practice does not promise comfort, easy answers, or fantasy outcomes. What it offers instead is something far more valuable: truth, discernment, and the courage to meet life as it is. Kathleen’s decades-long relationship with Tarot shows that real insight is earned through honesty, responsibility, and emotional maturity. Tarot, at its highest expression, becomes a mirror for the soul, reflecting not only what we hope for, but what we must understand, accept, and transform. In a world hungry for reassurance, this grounded wisdom is rare and quietly revolutionary.
