What Does Tarot Teach Us About the Soul’s Journey?

Tarot teaches us that the soul’s journey through earthly life involves choice, desire, challenges and consequences. Its symbols can help us explore our spiritual purpose and understand the deeper lessons of embodiment.

The Tarot deck has been interpreted in more languages than I know; throughout a long her/history by poets, writers and orators so esteemed that their very interest in commenting on this intriguing deck of cards, should be enough to convince even the most skeptical, that the Tarot is beyond a simple grouping of random images.

The imagery in the Tarot is created to depict our Soul’s journey in embodiment; to realization, knowledge and wisdom. The images are sequential, symbolic and universal. The sequence is both descriptive and prescriptive.

The more you discern the tarot, the more you come to how intricate and wise this system is. The fact that no one knows who created it and for what purpose, that it’s survived centuries prevailing through incredible opposition, contributes to its mysterious power.

Our Soul Embodies for a Reason

Surely earthly life is not merely a cruel cosmic joke. Embodiment is difficult terrain, so choosing selflessness reflects deep spiritual awareness, along with maturity, self-discipline, patience, and love.

When we’re in spirit form, it’s easier to be our best self. Our motives and intentions are transparent for all to witness. The imperative to survive is removed from the equation. Spiritual currency is acquired, not by grasping, cheating and hoarding but by sharing, selflessness, and honour.

As a Mortal, Self-focus is a Necessity for Survival

Needs like food, water and protection from the elements crash against even the best of intentions. The hierarchy of needs described by Maslow in the 1950’s explained how our needs, and where we place on the socio-economic scale, impact our ability to achieve the loftier planes of creativity, spirituality and individuality.

If you’ve ever contemplated what your soul’s purpose here on earth is, you know you are among the minority of the earth’s privileged to reach that highbrow ponderance. All your bodily needs are fulfilled, permitting you the time and space for lofty contemplation.

At some point in our lives, we wonder if there is something that embodiment reveals that our soul is unable to grasp any other way.

In physical form, we experience contrariness, selfishness, limitation, and suffering. We experience desire, will and decision. In spiritual terms, this translates into force, discrimination, and magnetism.

Consequences of Our Soul-Force in Embodiment

If we didn’t have an opportunity to experience the consequences of our soul-force in embodiment, we couldn’t fully perceive the light of right purpose and co-operation. Before we embodied, I’m pretty sure we possessed the highest intentions to be good, to make a positive difference, to spread the word of divine love.

Once we arrived, the veil of illusion slams into place and we forget those light-bringing, angelic, celestial intentions. That first demand of hunger, pain and terror grip us and our entire being is focused on determining how to be satiated, happy and safe.

The Tarot is lush with teachings about spiritual laws. Be careful what you wish for is one of its primary tenets. Your desires will make up the bars of your prisons. Pay attention to all your perceptions, especially those that come to you through your spiritual insights, such as, dreams and visions.

An in- depth study of the Tarot will open these special doors of spiritual perception. This is one of the many reasons why, as a divination tool, it carries a special power in lighting the path that you have found yourself on in the present and the path ahead. It’s a sacred text in picture form and its guidance is life changing. You don’t have to be a reader or even necessarily want to be one to benefit from its teachings.
