How Can We Be Sure We’re Acting Soulfully?
We know we’re in our soul-space when we feel overwhelmed with emotion. Tearfully, trembling and daring, we stumble to find the words to express it. Verbiage is ludicrously puny. We might reach for a book of poetry or turn on a tune that expresses the feeling.
Feelings evoked while gazing at an object of stunning beauty, listening to a rousing piece of music, contemplating a natural wonder, or witnessing something wonderful happen to someone we love deeply, are soulful experiences. Our hearts swell with a fantastic feeling of expansive and unconditional love. We don’t know whether we’ll laugh or cry or shout or skip down the street. We feel gloriously, keenly, soulfullyalive.
We may awaken from a dream knowing we have been touched by a sacred power. We are inspired by an inexplicable urge to make a change. Words like yearn, verve, and sacred resonate with this feeling. The soul feeling isn’t gentle or cozy. It erupts like a volcano in our psyche; abrupt, alarming and devastating. Sometimes we know we’ve been altered forever in that soul-filled moment. We cannot unlearn, unsee or unknow. We have crossed a threshold that has transformed us forever.
Is soul a part of nature? What is its purpose?
This soul aspect of ourselves can be (and often is!) at odds with our ego and seemingly logical life choices. Our soul’s imperative demands that we make changes that are terrifying. Sometimes apparently foolish to loved ones in its embarrassing lack of good, common sense. It might not be nice, sensible or kind. Rarely logical, linear or practical. These changes may appear to be self-negating. Like spontaneously leaving our home to go to another country to lend a helping hand in the wake of a natural disaster. Soulful and impractical.
Many clients describe meeting someone whom they “feel a special soul connection”to. They think and dream about them constantly. It’s disruptive. They feel as though this is more a reunion and than an introduction. Their soul has been ignited, their heart feels awake and inflated. This union has unleashed a change in them they cannot possibly analyze or fathom. All they imagine is be with that person night and day.
Their soul has glommed onto this person despite all reasonable comprehension. There may be eons of difference between them; a separation of language, culture, education, beliefs, world views or class yet these differences shrink in importance in the face of this inexplicable, soulful connection.
Just as suddenly as it started, however, this connection may be mysteriously severed, leaving them both confused and disoriented. Because that’s the thing with soul! A soulful connection rarely lasts for a lifetime. This soulful connect is fleeting, terrifying, all-encompassing – sweeping over and under us like a tidal wave leaving us trembling, mumbling and wanting. Then WHOOSH, it’s gone like a willow-the-wisp. A cool, damp fog surrounds us and fills the vacated space.
Soul teaches us about change. It latches onto things and people like glue but when it releases its attachment, it’s just as absolute.
We learn, often the hard way, the devastating consequences of ignoring or even worse, minimizing the import of these tough soul demands. We suffer soul sickness and descend into the netherworlds of boredom, burn out, and mediocrity so accurately depicted in the painting, The Scream by Edvard Munch.
Our lives feel flat, stark and purposeless. We eventually want to shriek at its merciless and sterile predictability.
We might distractedly grasp at quick fixes like shopping, media, or substances that numb the suffering such as alcohol or drugs. Inevitably we will feel compelled to be attentive to our soul’s guidance. It is vaster, wiser, and more loving than any other aspect of ourselves.
Trust the wisdom of your soulful yearnings. If you cannot follow its promptings, at least give it the time and attention it deserves. Whether you realize it or not, your soul is why you are here. Paint, sculpt, write, and meditate. Whatever it takes to honour those profound and sacred messages. As your soul communicates its guidance and you acknowledge its wisdom, your experience of life will become more profound and fulfilling. Laughter and crying will erupt more easily. Living for today will be the norm and your relationships will be more authentic.
You’ll be promptly alert to those matters in your life which are soul defying. You’ll be energetic in making the changes necessary to live that soulfully guided life at any cost.

My connections with others are never mundane or dictated by conformity or obligation. I value all the soulful interactions I have every day and wish you the same. Living a soulful life is one less travelled but never one you will regret.
